Training with Legends: Força Coaches and Students Learn from the Masters

Always a Student

At Força Martial Arts & Fitness, we believe that great instructors never stop being students. This fall, our team has been putting that philosophy into action, traveling, training, and learning from some of the greatest martial artists of our time.

Training with Grandmaster Bill “Superfoot” Wallace

In August, Força head coach Brian Wilson and Team LDMA head coach Danny Dring flew into Orlando, Florida, for two days of training with martial arts legends. Their first stop was in Palm Beach for private training with one of their longtime coaches and undefeated world kickboxing champion, Bill “Superfoot” Wallace.

The session took place inside Palm Beach Boxing, a 10,000-square-foot boxing gym that welcomed Bill like the legend he is. Superfoot began with boxing drills, including the intracacies behind his signature double hook and double jab, as he broke down the subtle timing behind each combination. From there, Bill shifted focus to the lead-leg side, round, and hook kicks inside the ring, using the corner pad as a target and the ropes for balance. Bill emphasized timing, technique, relaxation, and flexibility, highlighting how those attributes along with precision and speed define his style and approach to striking. Upon returning home, Coach Brian began integrating small details from Bill’s instruction into Forca's boxing and kickboxing programs. Força has multiple instructors and students who are black belts in the Superfoot System, and we proudly host Bill for a seminar and testing event every year.

Private Lesson with Master Rickson Gracie

The next day, Brian and Dring traveled to Vero Beach for a private lesson with Master Rickson Gracie, a living icon of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and one of the most respected figures in the entire martial arts world.

"Rickson’s presence alone has always had an impact on me, he is my hero, and it’s an absolute honor and privilege to have trained with him privately since 2023. We began this lesson by working on base, distribution of weight, and connection from standing, with focus on self-defense and takedown techniques. From there, we moved into his Vale Tudo Guard, exploring transitions and attacks, as well as escapes from side control and mount, and passes against butterfly guard.

Every session with Master Rickson has built upon each lesson I've had with him. He uses his principles of Invisible Jiu-Jitsu as the thread that binds everything together, teaching not only positions and techniques, but also the subtle feeling and intention behind them. His insight into fighting, self-defense, and the human body is truly unparalleled. Each lesson has left me humbled and inspired to keep learning and evolving."

-Brian Wilson

Training with Chris Haueter

In September, coach Brian and several Força students traveled to Combat Base Ozark for a seminar with Chris Haueter, one of the original “Dirty Dozen," a group of the first twelve American black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Forca Students in attendance included: Kolby Talley, Korina Sharp, Laurel Rogers, Chase Standridge, Dustin Philyaw, Eric Smith, and Head Coach Brian Wilson

Having trained privately with Master Rickson since the late 1980s, Haueter emphasized many of the same core principles of base, leverage, and timing. He began by teaching strategies for countering strikes as a grappler, followed by takedown setups that blend wrestling and jiu-jitsu. On the ground, he focused on a series of attacks from closed guard, reinforcing the value of simplicity and efficiency.

One of the most powerful themes shared by Superfoot, Rickson, and Haueter, each of whom has trained and competed for decades, was the importance of continuing to train intelligently and enjoy the art as we age…A lesson that resonates more deeply with each passing year.

The day also carried special significance as Combat Base Ozark owner Johnny Crocker received his black belt from Haueter. Johnny, who also serves as sheriff of Franklin County, has cross-trained with us at Força and received his brown belt from Haueter at Força in 2024. It was an honor to witness his promotion and celebrate his dedication.

Training with Guro Dan Inosanto

In October, coach Brian traveled with long-time friend and Força student Kolby Talley to Tulsa to train with Guro Dan Inosanto, one of Bruce Lee’s last living students and a legend in Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts.

Inosanto opened the seminar by teaching Bruce Lee’s Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, beginning with Attack by Combination, moving into Attack by Trapping, and then transitioning to Progressive Indirect Attack, three of the five ways of attack Lee developed. From there, Inosanto moved into striking and clinch work drawn from Muay Thai, Cambodian Boxing, and Burmese Boxing before shifting, after lunch, to Filipino Martial Arts. The afternoon focused on double stick and stick-and-dagger drills, blending rhythm, timing, and flow. This was coach Brian's third time training with Guro Inosanto in the last two years.

"I’ve always had a deep passion for Bruce Lee’s philosophy, and learning from someone who trained directly under him has been one of the greatest honors of my martial arts journey."

-Brian Wilson
